Overview

Feel the breath-taking brawn of a 45ft long, 480 break-horse-power monster of a vehicle with this incredible DAF XF Truck Driving experience.

Get to grips with the huge steering wheel as you sit, perched up high, inside the cab at the controls of this enormous piece of machinery and manoeuvre around a purpose-built course designed to get the most out of this unique driving experience.

After a quick briefing from a qualified HGV instructor, it’s time to put the truck through its paces and test its raw-power and acceleration through its 16 gears, as you weave through cones and learn how to reverse the colossal 45ft rig.

This is a fantastic and unordinary driving experience that will push your driving skills to the limit. Please note, there will be a supplement fee if you choose to visit the Dunsfold or Warden Law venue.

The person driving the truck will be required to sign a disclaimer accepting liability in the event of damage to the vehicle. The driver will be given an option to purchase damage waiver cover when booking to minimise their financial exposure should there be an accident. Drivers are under no obligation to purchase this optional waiver. Full details are available at the time of booking.

Car Chase Heroes. Abingdon

Jacki from Sales, July 2019

As a daughter of a commercial fitter I’ve been around trucks since childhood however never actually driven one. I’d had my eye on this experience for a while and when asked to do it as a ‘Tried and Tested by Us’ I was so excited.

Booking my experience was simple and Car Chase Heroes confirmed my booking via email, providing all the information I needed for the day.

Friday morning I made the journey to Abingdon in Oxfordshire, taking more notice than usual of the HGVs around me on the M25. Arriving at the army barracks location I could see the truck out on the track along with Optimus Prime and the other supercars and movie cars in the distance. The event was a hive of activity, music playing over the PA system, the sound of engines roaring and names being announced to make their way to the pit areas for briefing.

I queued up to sign in and provide my proof of ID, the female team member was really friendly and was genuinely excited for me to be doing the Truck Driving Experience. I stood and watched for about 20 minutes as the supercars left the pits, while waiting for my name to be announced for my 1.30 slot.

My briefing started as we approached the vehicle and once I’d climbed up the three steps into the cab Paul my instructor talked me through the gears, mirrors and other features before it was seatbelt on and time to turn the rig around and head out onto the track.

Passing Optimus Prime we had time for a quick trucker’s sault on the air horns before turning right and taking on the slalom cones. Paul was great at explaining the sight lines and it was surprising how maneuverable the 45ft long trailer was. Amazingly all cones standing we headed further down the track to a cone roundabout, Paul again telling me where to focus my sight to ensure that I pull out far enough so that the trailer followed without clipping the cones (English layout, clockwise and European, anticlockwise!)

Next was the skill I’d been dreading, ‘Reversing around a Corner’ coordination don’t fail me now! Paul told me to line up the back of the trailer with a point in the distance and to keep an eye on the verge. If I wanted the trailer to go left, turn the steering wheel to the right and vice versa. On my second attempt I did it, with perfect distance from the verge. Apparently the best attempt for the day! (I think he was being generous).

Then it was back through the slalom and finishing off an amazing experience back at the pits. I’ve done driving days where you’re whizzing around at speed but in my opinion this was more fun and tested my driving skills, a great alternative for someone who has tried the rest.

Yes I recommend this product.

I received a voucher as a gift (from another company) for a truck driving experience. When I redeemed it, I was directed to the Car Chase Heroes website...only to find there were very limited options for truck driving...at least within reasonable travelling distance. It was a bit of a faff to book this way. My advice woukd be to book through Car Chase Heroes themselves and cut out the voucher people. On the day everything was well organised and staff were great. I have to give a shout out to Gary, the truck instructor. What a lovely bloke...so enthusiastic and friendly. Beware the 'extra' collision damage waiver cost. In fairness though, the waiver lasts all day for all vehicles...and other cars were available at not too silly prices. I took advantage and went from the truck to a Caterham! Overall a great experience, and I will book again.

The actual truck experience was brilliant as it's always something I've wanted to do,the American gentleman (sorry can't remember his name) puts you at ease and makes the experience even more enjoyable. However I was disappointed that the truck was not as shown on the experience invite, so just be aware what you see may not be what you get!!

I've wanted to drive a truck for most of my life! Finally, I had the opportunity to. And I was really looking forward to it. To arrive and see the "course" for truck driving certainly took the shine off the experience for me. My instructor was great, the first they said was "Sorry for the course, this is what they give us" 20 mins didn't sound like much time, so I was lured into doubling the time - 40 mins was too long given the limited space... I still really enjoyed the experience, but do feel it could have been so much better. I understand it's a small circuit and clearly not designed for trucks, but I don't think it's fair to deceive customers. Yes, I did experience driving a truck, and I did enjoy it, but I wouldn't recommend this location for it.

My wife bought me a truck driving experience as a gift because I was always saying how I fancied having a go. The check-in at Abingdon was efficient and friendly. Naomi walked us to the truck where Gary, our instructor, was ready and waiting. Gary was great - he explained everything quickly and simply and put us at ease. The driving experience was very enjoyable, including some reversing manoeuvres that took a while to get into but in the end were great fun. Thanks to everybody for a very enjoyable experience!

Shocking No chance to feel the “raw power of the 16 gears” barely get above 10-15 miles per hour slowly manoeuvring through half a dozen cones on some pot hole ridden piece of tarmac and mud well away from the main track, the way the experience is worded I’d have at least expected to be able to actual have taken the truck on the track to feel the power going through the gears. Doing 10 miles an hour in an ancient truck that’s done 450,000 miles was a complete anti-climax and not worth the money, also being charged an additional £29 for a damage waiver, what a joke, what could I have damaged at that speed with nothing around but mud and a few cones

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. I can see the experience does state the following: After a quick briefing from a qualified HGV instructor, it’s time to put the truck through its paces and test its raw-power and acceleration through its 16 gears, as you weave through cones and learn how to reverse the colossal 45ft rig. This is a fantastic and unordinary driving experience that will push your driving skills to the limit. The driver will be given an option to purchase damage waiver cover when booking to minimise their financial exposure should there be an accident. Based on the photographs for the Truck experience I was expecting a large modern truck to drive but the reality was a very modest old lorry with a trailer to make it look long. The 'driving' consisted entirely of turning around in a relatively small space to back up the 'truck' between cones. At no point did I get out of 2nd gear or even be allowed to make my own steering decisions. The instructor just controlled every move and it was all over in 15 minutes. The admin was largely dominated by the numerous attempts to up sell the completely unnecessary extra insurance. Definitely not what I was expecting

Really had a brilliant time even though the queue was very long it was worth the wait. All the staff was great, wish it was longer but the person was patient and very nice, I would really recommend it.

There was nothing about this experience that made me feel like I was having a fun experience: I felt like I was on a conveyer belt trying to extract money from me. I was gifted a voucher to drive a lorry by a group of people that wanted to thank me for something significant that I did for them. The booking was a pain and I had to pay extra for a weekend drive (I work Monday – Friday) They wanted more money for me to pick the location most convenient to me. I got to the location on time and had to queue for an hour to get in. In the queue there was a real hard sell to get the extra insurance: telling me that if another car hit me while I am standstill, I would be fully liable. I was up sold to pay for taking a passenger in with me. They tried to sell many other add on’s such as a fast lap as a passenger etc etc. Then went in and was told it would be 20 mins until my drive… I waited 2 hours, kept getting told it would not be long, other customers complained and jumped the queue going before me. I noticed two others asking if their partners could sit in the truck with them: they were told, yes, no problem after I had to pay for my partner to come with me. I felt like they were trying to get as much money out of me while there. While there, multiple cars broke down or were over booked so they were asking people to swap to other cars before it got dark otherwise they would not be able to drive. It was just a mess and I will never use again.
