Overview

Take a step back to the days of wartime Britain with this tank driving gift experience, where you’ll take the controls of this 15 tonne military vehicle for 2 thrilling laps around a former WWII bombing range. It’s a perfect introduction to the world of tank driving, as well as experiencing a spot of history.

You’ll be in a tank with 2 others, taking it in turns to drive around the track. When it’s time for you to put your pedal to the metal, you’ll start driving with the hatch open, but not long after the hatch will be closed. You’ll only have the periscope to look through, giving you an insight into what life is really like on the battle field.

Whilst you’re not driving, sit back in the turret seat of the tank and enjoy the thrill of being passenger on this exciting ride, as well as the surrounding views of the stunning Leicestershire countryside.

You’re also welcome to explore the on-site museum for free, home to an array of fascinating military vehicles, from the likes of a 1947 Bell 47G helicopter to a 1940s M4 105 Sherman, along with tanks featured in famous films such as Saving Private Ryan.

A brief on the vehicle will be provided to prepare you for the tank-filled fun that you’re sure to have. Then it’s time to hop on the tank and tackle the tough terrain for 2 laps. A uniform and helmet will be provided so you’ll be fully kitted out for your experience.

What did your experience entail?
The location was very easy to find and well signposted on route, there was also a tank strategically located at the top of the drive which led to the venue. I parked close to the archery range and changed into old trainers before heading over to the reception. I was slightly early so had a wander around the museum and grabbed a coffee while waiting for my experience to start at 12.00.
Mick our instructor introduced himself and the other two people in the group, before fitting me with a safety helmet and briefing us on how the experience would run and how to safely move around the tank. Mick was great, his humour mixed with his knowledge and enthusiasm was perfect.
I drove the tank for two consecutive laps, for the first lap my head was out of the top providing good visibility, familiarising myself with the leavers and manoeuvring the machine, for the second lap with the hatch lid down, which is where it gets fun! My view was now restricted to only being able to see via a letterbox size window whilst receiving instructions from Mick via a head-set.
After being in the driving seat for two laps which was great fun, we all moved one seat, anticlockwise this provided each of us with new position / role within the tank for a total of six laps. I can honestly say being a passenger was almost as much fun as driving.
What did you enjoy the most?
There had been a couple of days of rain prior to my experience so the course was muddy with some large, water filled potholes. It was great fun driving through these knowing that the machine would just breeze through.
