Overview

This is a fascinating introduction to an ancient and intriguing pursuit. See for yourself an extraordinary relationship between man and bird of prey. Falconry was originally introduced as a means of obtaining "food for the table". In Medieval Britain birds of prey were often present at grand occasions such as pageants, weddings and jousting tournaments. Even today seeing these magnificent birds up close is a very special experience and one which you won't forget.

You'll handle the birds yourself under the watchful eye of the professionals (depending on location), before they take over to perform an impressive aerial show. You will have lots of time to take some fantastic pictures of you and your new feathered friend!

What did your experience entail?
After arriving at a cute little pub out in the Country in Epping, we made our way to the bar to get a cooling drink and were directed round the back for the 3-hour taster session. The event was being run by a falconer from a falconry centre which is home to one of the largest collections of Birds of Prey in the UK; including a few rare ones, of which we were lucky to meet a few of!
The day we attended there were 6 birds of prey present: 3 Owls, 2 Falcons and 1 Eagle. The session consisted of a quick safety briefing and what to expect, we then got to hold three of the birds in a rotation while the lady presenting talked to us about the birds. Even my bird-enthusiast partner learnt a few new things. We then got to the flying demo, where the group had turns having Trigger the barn owl fly to us from his perch. At one point he landed on a parasol and got startled by a passing motorbike and landed by the holder’s feet - earning giggles from the group. We then held the other two birds and finished with final questions. The expertise, kind handling and direction of the falconer meant we felt safe around the birds and we all enjoyed our day with these beautiful creatures.
What did you enjoy the most?
Meeting the individual birds and learning all about them was a delight. They all had their own personalities and everyone got a turn to spend time with each of them. My favourites that we met were Sam the Bateleur Eagle; with his colour changing face (red = happy, yellow = grumpy) was so impressive and very affectionate asking for cuddles (with the keeper). Then there was Flo the Black-banded owl who was elderly and very sleepy, but so cute and Trigger the Barn Owl who was the cheekiest.
